The Archives Goes to Convention

Now that we’ve established what Archives ARE NOT (dusty) and what Archives ARE (Active, Relevant & Amazing), let’s take a look at what’s been going on in the diocesan Archives lately!  And that is, CONVENTION, of course!

I’ve attended diocesan convention every year since I was first elected in 1994.  Here I am with this year’s Archives exhibit – Living the Eucharist.

Sometimes the Archives exhibit reflects the convention theme and sometimes it addresses archival issues – but it always draws a crowd.  Here’s a photo of diocesan Historiographer Bro. Carle Griffin, OCP (on right) with former Historiographer, the Rev. Allan Parker (left.)

Exhibits are a great way to let people know about your archives!  Everyone loves looking at photographs – particularly old ones – and particularly old ones of people they know!!  You’ll often hear comments like, “Just look at Father…doesn’t he look young?”  See anyone you recognize??

or, “Look at those hats – and those glasses...fashions sure have changed!! "

Brochures, newsletter & other publications, CDs, vestments, pins and artifacts of all kinds can also be used in exhibits and displays.  Just be careful to use copies or duplicates.  Unless you have an appropriate display environment and security available, don’t use one-of-a- kind items! For assistance with displays and exhibits, feel free to contact me!!

In addition to developing and staffing the Archives exhibit, I also go to Convention as part of diocesan staff, and for another somewhat important reason – to be elected to my position as Archivist and Records Manager!  But that’s perhaps a story for another blog post!!
