Recovery Sunday/Alcohol and Drug Awareness Sunday
The General Convention Resolution and the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church annually proclaim that Christ the King Sunday (Sunday following Thanksgiving Sunday), or any other Sunday designated by the Priest in Charge, shall be observed as Alcohol and Drug Awareness Sunday.
Recovery Ministries of the Episcopal Church each year publish an Alcohol and Drug Awareness Sunday packet of Adult, Youth and Sunday School educational materials, selections of scriptural readings and music appropriate for the service and suggested sermon topics.
These materials can be ordered from Recovery Ministries in advance (usually by mid July). Every congregation is urged to become a member of Recovery Ministries, as it is a grassroots self-sustaining organization, funded only by memberships, donations and occasional grants. Typically an Alcohol and Drug Awareness Sunday observance includes:
- Hymn selections
- Old and New Testament Readings
- Prayer of the People
- Sermon or Homily, which may be given by a member of the Committee on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, or a member of AA or Alanon, or by the Priest in Charge following suggested topics.
- Adult Education presentation about Alcoholism , Substance Abuse Treatment resources and Recovery
- Children Sunday School Curriculum
- Youth or Teen Curriculum
