The Joyce and Jim McConnell Fund

On December 27th, the Diocese lost a longtime, well known, admired and respected leader, Joyce McConnell. At the invitation of Bishop Bayne in 1954 Joyce came to work for the Diocese- the start of a 37 year career. She retired from her last position, Diocesan Treasurer, in 1991- having served under five bishops. While officially the Treasurer of the Diocese of Olympia, her reach and interests extended far beyond simply the financial realm. She was a much sought after speaker (both for her insight and delightful accent), not only in the Diocese of Olympia, but throughout the Church nationally. Her advice was sought by treasurers in dioceses throughout the nation, as well as by local people of all walks. She always had time and compassion for coworkers, committee members, clergy or her vast network of friends who frequently sought her advice.

When Jim, Joyce’s husband died, she directed all donations sent in his memory to a newly established Jim McConnell Fund in the Diocesan Investment Fund. The income from this fund has supported such activities as camp scholarships, scholarships for women to attend the Episcopal Churchwomen’s Triennial, travel assistance for young people from our former Companion Diocese (Diocese of Jerusalem) to visit western Washington and additions to the assets of the Micro E Loan fund operated by  the diocesan Refugee Resettlement Office.  With Joyce’s passing, her children have renamed the fund, the Joyce and Jim McConnell Fund, to honor both of their parents. It is their hope the income from this fund will continue far into the future to support the priorities of the day. Those wishing to make a contribution in memory of Joyce can send their check to the Diocese of Olympia, McConnell Fund 1551 10th Ave. E  Seattle, WA 98102, or contribute online.
