Canon for Liturgy

Canon for Liturgy

The Rev. Canon Janet CampbellDuring more than 20 years of ordained ministry, in parishes and cathedrals, the Rev. Canon Janet Campbell has been a servant of our liturgy and of worshiping communities large and small. In the Diocese of Olympia she was Director of Liturgy and the Arts at St. Mark's Cathedral, Seattle and a member of the Liturgy and Arts Commission. She taught at Seabury-Western Seminary, the Chicago Deacons' School and Seattle University's School for Theology and Ministry. She was a pioneer in centering celebrations of new ministry around the baptismal covenant, first in parishes in Chicago in the early 1990s and then in the liturgy she designed for the Institution of Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold, a liturgy used again for the Institution of Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori.

Janet believes that liturgy authentic to the risen Christ and to the local congregation arises from a dynamic interweaving of the church's tradition, the discoveries and recoveries of the liturgical renewal movement, the character of the particular worshiping community, and resources old and new. As Canon for Liturgy, she hopes to be helpful in the following areas, and in any other ways that will serve our liturgical growth as worshiping communities and as a diocese:

  •     Engaging the community in thinking and talking about liturgy.
  •     Evaluating liturgical practice.
  •     Teaching and facilitating liturgical change.
  •     Evaluating worship space.
  •     Use of symbols and signs.
  •     Exploring the partnership of presider and deacon.
  •     Developing and nurturing liturgical leaders and ministers.
  •     Formation and education of worship committees.
  •     Workshops, adult forums, retreats with liturgical focus.
